AI Overviews and Your Business: How to Stay Visible When Google Summarizes

Google's AI Overviews are summarizing your content and skipping your website. Here's how to adapt your SEO strategy so you still get the click.

By Ignite Digital Creative

Google used to send you traffic. Now it's learning to answer questions itself—and it's using your content to do it.

AI Overviews are the biggest shift in search since mobile. Instead of ten blue links, users see an AI-generated summary at the top of the page, compiled from sources across the web. Sometimes your site is cited. Sometimes it isn't. Either way, the user may never click through.

This sounds like a threat. It is. But it's also an opportunity for the brands that adapt—because most of your competitors are still optimizing for 2022.

What AI Overviews changed

1. Informational queries are losing clicks. If someone searches "what is a lead magnet," the AI Overview answers it. The user has no reason to click any of the 10 sources cited.

2. Commercial and transactional queries are less affected. If someone searches "best ad agency in Phoenix," they still need to evaluate options and make a decision. The AI can summarize, but the click still happens.

3. Being cited matters even without the click. If your brand is the source cited in an AI Overview, you've earned implied authority. Users may not click now, but they remember your name when they're ready to act.

How to stay visible

1. Target intent the AI can't satisfy. AI Overviews summarize information. They can't deliver a tool, a template, a calculator, or a personalized assessment. If your page offers something interactive or downloadable, the AI can't replace it—and users still click.

2. Be the source, not the summary. AI systems cite content that is clear, structured, and authoritative. Use definitive statements, proper headings, and schema markup. Make your content easy to parse and hard to disagree with.

3. Own commercial keywords. Shift resources toward bottom-funnel content—comparisons, reviews, pricing, and decision-stage guides. These are the keywords where AI Overviews are least disruptive and clicks still happen.

4. Build brand recognition beyond search. If your audience knows your name before they search, they search for you by name—and AI Overviews don't intercept branded searches. Social media, email, and partnerships matter more than ever.

What not to do

Don't panic and abandon SEO. Don't try to "optimize for AI" with keyword stuffing or unnatural formatting. Don't assume AI Overviews are everywhere—they still appear for a minority of queries, mostly informational.

The strategy is the same as it's always been: publish the best content on the topic, make it easy to understand, and build authority that makes you the source worth citing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, compiling information from multiple sources into a single answer. They change how users interact with search results by providing answers before users click through to websites.

Will AI Overviews kill my website traffic?

AI Overviews may reduce traffic for top-of-funnel informational queries where users get their answer in the summary. However, commercial and transactional queries are less affected because users still need to click to make a purchase or booking decision.

How do I get cited in AI Overviews?

To be cited in AI Overviews, publish clear, factually structured content with definitive statements, use proper headings and schema markup, and build strong domain authority. AI systems prefer content that is easy to parse and authoritative.
